The best Nile River cruise and the best way to see Egypt’s ancient treasures is on an Oberoi Nile Cruiser where luxury meets ancient history

Egypt’s Nile River is populated with ancient wonders and a host of cruise lines vying for your tourism dollars, but Oberoi is one of the only operators that secures private docking privileges in every port as well as a dedicated private guide and driver for each party throughout the trip.

The Oberoi brand, which is based in India, is renowned for superior service (the company also runs a highly regarded hospitality and management school) and elegant luxury. They are increasing their Nile presence this year with debut of two new ships this autumn—the Melouk and Malekat, luxurious Dahabeyas (motorless sailing ships) that accommodate just seven passengers each.

Currently, Oberoi operates two Nile ships: The Philae and The Zahra. The Zahra is the newest of the two, having just completed a swanky renovation of the entire ship. It’s easy to be seduced by the boat’s grand marble lobby and large staterooms with wood floors, hardwood finishes, glossy tile bathrooms and panoramic window views. Accents such as locally sourced rugs showcase the artistry of Egyptian craftsmen and decorative accents made from indigenous materials pay homage to Egypt’s rich heritage. The ambiance is distinctly sophisticated and elegant, with only 27 luxury staterooms and two suites. Onboard, it never feels crowded or busy, and there are always smiling helpful Oberoi staff on hand to assist with any request. But, luxury is only part of the experience; what truly sets Oberoi apart on the Nile is their dedication to every detail—each party works with the same guide (Egyptologist) and driver throughout the duration of the cruise, boats are docked privately, and visits to ancient sites are timed to avoid the other cruise crowds.

When Oberoi first started cruising the Nile they met with top local guides to determine the ideal timing for visiting sites without crowds (which can be a serious issue). Using that intel, they designed intuitive cruise itineraries that avoid the peak times at sites. Expect to see every other cruise line leaving port while Oberoi stays put—an intentional move to ensure guests visit the sites during off-peak hours.

Onboard

Downtime on the Zahra can take the form of several activities. For such an intimate ship, the offerings are impressive. The rooftop features the largest pool on any Nile River cruise (and it is delightfully warm), as well as a full bar and plenty of loungers.

The gym is large enough for several people to work out—and the spa has one of the best views on the boat—a couple’s room with panoramic windows overlooking the Nile. This is not a cruise with daily scheduled entertainment but rather offers a range of amusement to be enjoyed at one’s own discretion. The panoramic windows in staterooms make a convincing argument for staying put and watching the Nile roll by, but the ship offers plenty of lounge space with even bigger views—cocktails and Nile watching is a fine afternoon activity.

Then we have the dining, which is elegant, multi-course and individualized to your taste. There is no group seating, but rather, guests are given their own tables (which have ample space between them) and the dining room is large enough to accommodate the entire boat should everyone opt to eat at the same time. Menus are a nice mix of international offerings (burgers, pasta) along with Indian and Egyptian selections—as Oberoi is based in India, the curries are always going to be a specialty.

Service from beginning to end is unfailingly polite and kind—and omnipresent. Pop your head into any space and someone will be standing by, smiling, ready to assist. You won’t have an assigned butler but no matter, it’s a a ship of butlers. Discovering all of ancient Egypt’s wonders is a monumental task, in truth you’ll never see it all, but the Oberoi team makes it as seamless and elegant as possible.

Pro Tip

A word on wine and spirits. Best to purchase those both in advance in the airport duty free if this is something you care about. Due to extreme import taxes (400%) on imported wines and spirits the prices in Egypt are astronomical. You’ll have your pick of Egyptian wines, which are modestly good, but if you want international options, come prepared. Comfortable shoes, hat and sun attire are essential, as tombs and temples require a large amount of walking.

Coming this fall the Oberoi Melouk and Malekat: Inspired by the regal Dahabeyas of the 1920s (two-masted sailboats that do not use engine power) the boats will offer a truly intimate sailing experience over six- or four-night itineraries between Luxor and Aswan. Vessel amenities include the signature Oberoi Spa with ancient Egyptian-inspired treatments, a plunge pool, main restaurant with regional and international cuisine and the option for ancient cooking lessons, and personalized Oberoi butler service.
