Megan Thee Stallion On The Launch Of Her New Tequila, Chicas Divertidas

Ever since exploding on the scene in 2020 with her certified platinum debut studio album, “Good News,” Megan Thee Stallion has enjoyed status as one of the hottest names in music. Today she looks to become one of the hottest names in tequila. Timed to coincide with her 30th birthday, the three-time Grammy Award winning rapper/songwriter has just unveiled Chicas Divertidas, her own entry into the booming category.

The ultra premium lineup hits shelves with dual expressions: a citrus-forward Blanco that finishes in a slow-moving parade of rosemary and green tea; and the complex, caramel-laden Reposado. The former sells for $70, the latter for $80. This top-shelf pricing is justified, according to the artist, given the quality of the juice. It is collected from extra mature agave, grown in the rich highland soils of Jalisco, and produced by the expert hands at the acclaimed Tequila Centinela distillery in Arandas, Mexico.

The commitment to quality can be seen inside and out, as the wholly unique bottles are almost art pieces in their own right. Cuts and grooves in the deign are meant to echo the basic shapes of the agave plant and a dagger-pierced heart enclosure on the decanter is meant to epitomize the brand’s motto: "Keep it cute, classy, and cut-throat."

Chicas Divertidas is currently available for pre-order at ChicasDivertidasTequila.com as well as ReserveBar.com. It will roll-out nationally over the ensuing weeks. In the meantime, we wanted to connect with Ms. Thee Stallion, herself, to get a better sense of what brought her into the tequila realm and why she thinks her adoring fans (nicknamed “Hotties”) will be so thirsty for a pour.

The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Why did you want to launch a tequila, specifically, as opposed to any other style of spirit?

Megan Thee Stallion: “Well, everybody knows I’m hot girl culture. I like to have fun. Everybody knows that I am a vibe curator. When you go to parties, in my experience, everybody’s drink of choice is tequila. I feel like it’s just a universal happy drink. And I have always loved a good reposado. It’s my favorite. So I decided, I need to be the one bringing the vibe to parties--with gifts. So that’s how I came up with Chicas.”

Tequila is on its way to becoming the number one category of spirit in the US. How do you feel that your new bottles stand out in the crowd?

MTS: “For one, the bottle is beautiful. It looks almost like a potion or an elixir. It’s a very high quality bottle; it has pretty color gradients; my heart with the dagger through the top; gold accents. I think it looks quality. But the second thing is, I’m not a brand ambassador for a liquor. I’m not just putting my face on someone else’s brand. This is my tequila. I took my time to craft the liquid and the bottle. Everything about this represents me. It’s my business; it’s my company. And that sets me apart from other celebrity-endorsed alcohols."

What was the process like to develop your liquid?

MTS: “I went down to the factory multiple times. The first time I ever went it really blew my mind because it looked so serious in there. I had never seen a field of agave. To see everybody out there and to go into the field and chop agave. It’s grown out of volcanic soil. The vibe around the whole distillery is just amazing. I didn’t know the fumes could make you feel tipsy, though. I was like, ‘Okay, so everybody is just at work turnt up, all day.’ But no, I went down there and ate local food and got in the field with everybody. Because I take this seriously and I want the Hotties to have something that’s an extension of me."

How many samples did you taste through before you landed on the final recipe?

MTS: “Since we’ve been developing it for a few years, I couldn’t even tell you how many different juices I tasted. But I didn’t want something that was too sweet. Because I’m not a fan of super-sweet alcohol. I didn’t want something that was too tough. I wanted it to be very light. I’m very happy with how it turned out.”

You also collaborate with plenty of artists in your day job. What musicians are you must eager to work with?

MTS: “I’m just keep putting it into the air; I really wanna work with Billie Eilish and FINNEAS. I love them. I’m just trying to figure out what can we do; what does Billie Eilish and Megan Thee Stallion sound like? I gotta send them tequila to get it started.”

What has been the most surreal moment for you thus far in your career?

MTS: “My favorite moment was definitely meeting Beyonce [laughs]. I met her first in 2020, I think. Every time I see her I act like a little kid. And I really need to stop that at this point. Like I’m always fanned out.”

And did you get to try her new whisky brand?

MTS: “Yes, you know my girl sent me the SirDavis. It was great! And a very fancy bottle.”

What’s the best tequila drinking tip that you can share?

MTS: “After every shot, drink water. Stay hydrated.”

Do you have a preferred tequila cocktail for Chicas Divertidas?

MTS: “I keep thinking this is a drink that people don’t really know about, but I love a good Ranch Water. I like it straight to the point. Just give me club soda, a little lime juice, my tequila. Boom. Happy. When I tell other people about it they say, ‘What the hell is a Ranch Water,’ and I’m thinking, ‘Is this just a Texas thing?’"
