Captain America: Brave New World marks Harrison Ford’s 85th official screen role in the actor’s illustrious acting career which began more than five decades ago. In the film, Ford plays President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who also transforms into the Red Hulk.

Ford appeared in mostly small roles in film or one-off TV guest roles for the first 10 years of his career, but occasionally gained notice for his turns in such films as The Conversation and American Graffiti.

Ford’s breakthrough role in the film business didn’t happen until 1977, though, when he played the scoundrel space pirate Han Solo in director George Lucas’ space opera Star Wars. Before too long, Ford became a global superstar.

See photos below of Ford, 82, in his biggest roles since Star Wars, including his turn in Captain America: Brave New World.

‘Star Wars’ (1977)

Harrison Ford’s role as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope marked the beginning of the actor’s long collaborative relationship with writer-director-producer George Lucas.

Ford reprised Han three more times, in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi in 1983 and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens in 2015.

The actor also appeared as Han in the much-maligned Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978 and made an uncredited cameo appearance in 2019’s sequel trilogy finale Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.

‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’ (1981)

In between the second and third films in the original Star Wars trilogy, Harrison Ford worked under the direction of Steven Spielberg and producer-writer George Lucas as the daring adventurer Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was later retitled Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Raiders of the Lost Ark kicked off a new film franchise for Ford, which continued with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Ford reprised the role of the treasure-seeking archaeologist two more times for the big screen, in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in 2023.

‘Blade Runner’ (1982)

Harrison Ford took on another sci-fi role that was destined to become a classic with director Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Ford plays former police officer-turned-blade runner Rick Deckard, who hunts down Replicants—who are AI beings who look and act like humans.

Like he did with his Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, Ford reprised Deckard decades later for the 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049.

‘Witness’ (1985)

Harrison Ford took the serious film route under the direction of Peter Weir for the crime drama Witness. The film stars Ford as Detective Capt. John Book, who goes undercover in an Amish community to protect a young boy, Samuel (Lukas Hass), who witnessed the murder of his father.

Witness marks the first and only time Ford has been nominated for an Oscar, which was in the Best Actor category.

‘Working Girl’ (1988)

Harrison Ford explored the romantic comedy genre alongside Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver for director Mike Nichols in the 1988 hit Working Girl.

Ford plays Jack Trainer, a mergers and acquisitions associate who becomes romantically involved with Tess McGill (Griffith). Tess is a secretary who is climbing the corporate ladder in hopes of being a corporate executive after her boss, Katharine Parker (Weaver) steals her idea and sells it as her own.

‘The Fugitive’ (1993)

Following the success of his 1990 murder mystery Presumed Innocent and first turn as CIA analyst Jack Ryan in Patriot Games in 1992, Harrison Ford played Dr. Richard Kimble in director Andrew Davis’ big-screen adaptation of the 1960s television classic The Fugitive starring David Janssen.

Kimble is a fugitive being pursued by U.S. Marshals Deputy Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) after he is wrongfully accused of murdering his wife, Helen (Sela Ward).

‘Clear and Present Danger’ (1994)

Following the success of 1992’s Patriot Games, Harrison Ford reprised his role as Jack Ryan in director Phillip Noyce’s Clear and Present Danger. Based on the bestselling novel by author Tom Clancy, Clear and Present Danger marked the second and last time Ford played Ryan.

‘Air Force One’ (1997)

Harrison Ford stars as President James Marshall for director Wolfgang Petersen’s action thriller Air Force One. In the film, a terrorist, Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman) hijacks Marshall’s plane and threatens the president and his family, spurring the Commander in Chief to use his military skills to defeat Ivan and save the day.

‘What Lies Beneath’ (2000)

Harrison Ford goes down the supernatural thriller route in director Robert Zemeckis’ What Lies Beneath as Norman Spencer, a university scientist whose wife, Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer) is convinced a ghost is haunting their Vermont home.

‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ (2008)

Harrison Ford made headlines in 2008 for his long-awaited return to his legendary role of Indy in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The film, which saw the return of Karen Allen as his fellow Raiders of the Lost Ark adventurer and former girlfriend Marion Ravenwood, also starred Shia LaBeouf as their son, Mutt Williams.

‘42’ (2013)

Harrison Ford played legendary baseball executive Branch Rickey opposite a then-relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman, who played baseball icon Jackie Robinson in 42.

Set in 1947, 42—which was the iconic player’s number—chronicles how Rickey signed Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, making him the first African-American player to play Major League Baseball.

Boseman, who went on to star as music legend James Brown in Get on Up and Marvel superhero T’Challa/Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, sadly died of cancer in 202o at age 43.

‘Blade Runner 2049’ (2017)

Harrison Ford reprised his classic role of Rick Deckard in director Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, 36 years after director Ridley Scott’s original. This time, though, Ford shared the lead with Ryan Gosling, who played the blade runner replicant KD6-3.7, or K for short.

‘1923’ (2022/2025)

Harrison Ford became a part of the Yellowstone saga in December of 2022 with the prequel series 1923, where he played Jacob Dutton opposite Helen Mirren’s Cara Dutton. Ford and Mirren will be back with a new season of 1923 on Feb. 20.

‘Captain America: Brave New World (2025)

Harrison Ford takes over for the late William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World, where he stars opposite Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America.

Captain America: Brave New World begins with the election of former Gen. Ross’ election as U.S. president, but unforeseen circumstances find Ross turning into the menacing Red Hulk. The film opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
