Trump Frames 2023 Mug Shot—Hangs It Outside The Oval Office

Following

Topline

A photo taken Thursday of President Donald Trump meeting with Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi at the White House has revealed an interesting interior design choice in the West Wing: Trump’s 2023 mug shot, framed and hanging just outside of the door to the Oval Office.

Key Facts

One photo of the presidential meeting, taken by Jim Watson of AFP, shows one of the doors to the West Wing standing ajar and, in the hallway beyond, Trump's mug shot hanging in full view.

The photo—which made history when Trump became the first United States president, former or sitting, to have his mug shot taken—is matted against a black background and hanging in a gilded frame.

It’s unclear for how long the mug shot has been hanging outside of the president’s West Wing office, but Modi’s visit on Thursday marked the fourth by a world leader to the White House since the second Trump administration began.

Key Background

Trump’s booking photo was taken at Fulton County jail in Georgia in August 2023. The photo came after he surrendered to authorities in Atlanta following the indictment of himself and 18 others on racketeering and conspiracy charges, with the prosecution alleging they "knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy" to overthrow the 2020 election results. He was released on a $200,000 bond and denied all of the allegations against him. Last June, the case was halted while a panel of judges considered if Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified from the case because of a romantic relationship she had with the special prosecutor hired to help handle the proceedings. In December, Willis was kicked off the case, but it was not thrown out. The Fulton County District Attorney’s office last month appealed the ruling to the Georgia Supreme Court.

Big Number

$7.1 million. That's how much money Donald Trump made within days of his Fulton County booking after selling a series of T-shirts, coffee mugs, koozies and posters featuring the mug shot.

Surprising Fact

rump appeared to attempt a recreation of the famous mug shot for the official presidential portrait taken at the start of his second term. His first official portrait showed Trump standing tall and smiling wide, but the second has him casting a downward expression with a straight face and a slightly raised eyebrow—very similar to the expression in the photo taken by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office.
