2025 BAFTA Surprise Wins Shake Up Oscar Race – Complete List Of Winners

Win surprise wins by Anora star Mikey Madison and the Vatican thriller Conclave, British Academy of Film and Television Arts Film Awards, also known as the BAFTA Awards, proved on Sunday that there’s no sure thing heading into the 2025 Oscars.

Conclave led all nominees heading into the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards with 12 nods, followed by the musical crime drama Emilia Pérez with 11 and the historical epic The Brutalist follows with nine.

Actor David Tennant hosted the 2025 BAFTAs.

Conclave pulled out an upset victory at the BAFTAs, winning Best Film and Outstanding British Film. The Best Film honor for Conclave is especially significant since it marks the first major awards season victory for director Edward Berger’s film.

Last week, the Critics Choice Awards and the Producers Guild Awards named Anora as the Best Picture of 2024. The Golden Globes, meanwhile, named BAFTA Best Film nominees The Brutalist as the Best Motion Picture – Drama winner and Emilia Pérez as the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy winner.

Conclave’s win at the BAFTAs doesn’t make the film a lock at the Oscars, however. In the last 10 years, only two BAFTA Best Film winners—2020’s Nomadland and 2023’s Oppenheimer—went on to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Director Sean Baker’s R-rated romantic comedy headed into the BAFTAs Sunday with seven nominations and like last week’s CCAs, Producers Guild Awards and Directors Guild of America Awards, the film pulled at least one stunning upset. Last week, Anora won Best Picture at the CCAs and the Producers Guild Awards, while Baker took the top prize at the DGAs.

At the BAFTAs Sunday, the big upset belonged to Mikey Madison, who won the Best Actress Trophy. Madison’s win comes as a big shock since The Substance star Demi Moore has mostly dominated this awards season with several wins including Best Actress awards at the Golden Globes and the CCAs.

Madison’s win at the BAFTAs suddenly makes the Best Actress race the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards and the 2025 Oscars, since both are in the running for Best Actress for those ceremonies.

Adrien Brody, however, kept his awards season streak going with a Best Actor BAFTA win for The Brutalist. Previously Brody won the Best Actor trophy at the Golden Globes (Motion Picture – Drama) and the CCAs, and is up in the Lead Actor category at the SAG Awards.

After winning the Golden Globe for Best Director but losing out to Baker at the DGA Awards, Brady Corbet won the Best Director award for The Brutalist at Sunday’s BAFTAs.

Both The Brutalist and Conclave led with the most wins with four BAFTAs apiece.
