The value of car insurance can shine brightest after an unexpected disaster. That’s what Kathleen Flynn in Missouri discovered when her family lost their car in an EF4 tornado that also took their newly remodeled house.

“We made a split-second decision to go into our 120-year-old cellar, clinging to family as we felt everything being blown away above,” she recalls. “The aftermath looked like a war zone. Fortunately, our car insurance was amazing. We had a total loss of $8,000, and our car insurance reimbursed us for the full amount after our deductible.”

With so much money on the line after a disaster, we took a look at who offers the best car insurance for the money. Travelers topped our evaluation.

Our Expert Take

We’re impressed by Travelers’ low rates, wide variety of coverage options and decent digital experience. These elements combined to push Travelers to the top of our rankings.

Travelers’ rates are well below the nationwide average for every driver profile we analyzed. Its rates for drivers with a DUI conviction are the second cheapest, and rates for senior drivers ages 65 to 80 are the third cheapest of the companies we analyzed.

You can upgrade to packages of helpful coverage types. Travelers’ Responsible Driver Plan includes accident forgiveness and minor violation forgiveness, while its Premier Responsible Driver Plan includes those plus a decreasing deductible and a total loss deductible waiver. Travelers’ new car replacement is superior, lasting five years instead of the standard two to three years others offer.

Travelers’ usage-based insurance program, IntelliDrive, has a 12% discount at sign-up and tracks your driving for 90 days. It can provide safe drivers with up to a 30% discount at renewal. However, you could see your rates increase if your driving doesn’t score well.

A digital discount is available if you enroll in the IntelliDrive app, register for MyTravelers and opt for paperless delivery.

Travelers’ online quoting process is pretty good, showing coverage choices you may want to consider based on your specific profile. However, you cannot buy a policy online. You must call an agent to finalize the quote and buy a policy.

Based on our survey of Travelers customers:

  • They are likely to recommend Travelers car insurance to a friend or family member.
  • They are satisfied with their purchase.

Among Travelers customers who have made claims:

  • They were very satisfied with the overall claims process.

Our Expert Take

Erie stands out for excelling in handling claims. It received the highest grade (A-) among the insurers we evaluated, based on grades from auto body specialists for its collision repair claims process. And 90% of Erie customers we surveyed who have filed a claim were satisfied with the claims process. That’s the highest claims satisfaction rate in our survey and well above the average of 83%.

Erie’s rates were consistently among the lowest in our analysis for good drivers and those with black marks on their records, including speeding tickets and accidents. It also has low rates for teens, young adults and seniors. Erie’s Rate Lock can lock in a great rate: It freezes your premium so it stays the same year after year, even if you file a claim. Your rates will only change if you make specific policy changes, such as adding a driver or vehicle.

Erie offers a wide range of coverage options, and some are automatically included without extra cost: There’s pet injury coverage, no deductible for windshield repair and travel expenses coverage (covers meals and hotel if your car is disabled away from home due to a problem covered by your policy). Unlike many competitors, Erie includes accident forgiveness at no extra cost, although to qualify you can’t have made a claim within three years. Rental car reimbursement is automatically included with comprehensive coverage in most states.

A downside with Erie is its digital experience. Its app has received low marks from users (averaging only 2.9 out of 5), its website doesn’t have a live chat, and although you can get a quote online you must connect with an agent to finalize and buy a policy.

Based on our survey of Erie customers:

  • They are extremely likely to recommend Erie car insurance to a friend or family member.
  • They are extremely satisfied with their purchase.

Among Erie customers who have made claims:

  • They were extremely satisfied overall with the claims process.

Our Expert Take

One reason we like Nationwide is that it offers low rates for all driver types and age groups that we analyzed. (USAA is slightly cheaper for a few of the driver profiles we examined, but it sells only to military members, veterans and their immediate families.) Nationwide has the cheapest rates available to the general public for good drivers and those who have poor credit or a speeding ticket, and those who caused an accident with injury. It also has good rates for teens added to parents’ policies and senior drivers ages 65 to 80.

Beyond great rates, Nationwide has a terrific lineup of coverage options to tailor a policy to your specific needs—such as accident and minor violation forgiveness, new car replacement and a vanishing deductible if you don’t make claims.

Nationwide’s usage-based insurance program, SmartRide, can further lower rates with a sign-up discount and potential savings of up to 40% at renewal if your driving scores well. And if your driving doesn’t score well, you don’t run the risk of increased rates like you do with some other auto insurers. Its pay-per-mile program, SmartMiles, can save you up to 10% if you have low mileage.

Unfortunately, Nationwide has a poor digital experience because you can’t get an online quote and its website has a chatbot with only limited responses. However, Nationwide’s mobile app scores well (4.6 out of 5) with users for its features, including the ability to file and track claims.

Based on our survey of Nationwide customers:

  • They are likely to recommend Nationwide car insurance to a friend or family member.
  • They are very satisfied with their purchase.

Among Nationwide customers who have made claims:

  • They were very satisfied overall with the claims process.

USAA stands out for its wide range of coverage options and discounts designed specifically for military members. For example, there’s a 15% discount if you garage your car on a military base. And if you store your vehicle during deployment, you can save as much as 60%.

Our Expert Take

Geico’s competitive rates make it a strong contender for many types of drivers, especially those with poor credit. But its coverage options are somewhat limited: It doesn’t offer new car replacement, gap insurance, rideshare insurance or a vanishing deductible.

We found Geico to have a very good digital experience, although its website could benefit from a search function to improve user experience. Its app earned a superb rating from users (4.8 out of 5) and its website has a helpful live chat and a Spanish version. You can get a quote and buy a policy online. We found its quoting process easy to use, with helpful information to guide you through the steps.

Based on our survey of Geico customers:

  • They are very likely to recommend Geico car insurance to a friend or family member.
  • They are extremely satisfied with their purchase.

Among Geico customers who have made claims:

Opinions on Geico’s customer service vary, with some praising responsiveness while others saying they’re unhappy with its claims handling.

  • Rates for good drivers are lower than the national average.
  • Low level of complaints made against Geico car insurance to state insurance departments.

Our Expert Take

Progressive offers competitive auto insurance rates for good drivers, drivers who have caused accidents, and drivers with speeding tickets or bad credit. It had the cheapest rates for drivers with a DUI conviction among the companies we analyzed. Progressive’s competitive rates span across age groups, too, with lower-than-average rates for teens, young adults and seniors.

Teachers and military members can snag additional savings with decent average discounts (13% and 14%, respectively).

Progressive is unique for its three accident forgiveness levels: “Small accident forgiveness” for claims up to $500 is automatically included in most states. You can buy accident forgiveness for claims exceeding $500 if you’ve been with Progressive for at least five years and have had no accidents or violations. Or you can purchase benefits so that one accident is forgiven per policy period.

Progressive’s vanishing deductible is another attractive perk: It reduces your deductible over time if you have no accidents or violations.

For those who value a robust digital experience, Progressive’s app lets you see your insurance ID card, pay your bill, report a claim and send claim photos, and obtain roadside assistance. Its website offers a helpful search function but no live chat.

Based on our survey of Progressive customers:

  • They are likely to recommend Progressive car insurance to a friend or family member.
  • They are very satisfied with their purchase.

Among Progressive customers who have made claims:

  • They were somewhat satisfied overall with the claims process.

Progressive car insurance customers praise it for providing competitive rates at first. It’s a popular choice for drivers switching from other insurers like Geico and USAA. However, many customers complain about issues with Progressive’s claims handling and significant rate hikes upon renewal, undermining the initial savings.

Pros & Cons
  • You can get a quote and buy a car insurance policy online.
  • Provides rideshare insurance, nonowner car insurance and SR-22 filings.
  • Low level of complaints made to state insurance departments.
  • No new car replacement coverage.
  • Received only a C grade for the last four years from auto repair experts for its collision claim process.
  • Progressive’s usage-based program (Snapshot) may get you a decent discount, but your rates could increase instead if your driving score is low. Progressive says rates go up for 20% of drivers who use Snapshot.

Our Expert Take

Westfield can be a good bet for families trying to rein in auto insurance costs. It has family-related discounts, such as one for teenage drivers (the Family Discount) and one for adult children ages 22 to 29 who buy their own Westfield car insurance policies (the Next Generation Discount). There’s also a Companion Discount if you buy your own Westfield auto policy and someone in your household already has one from Westfield.

Our analysis found that Westfield has competitive rates that are below average for good drivers, drivers who’ve caused an accident, and drivers with speeding tickets or poor credit. Rates are also pretty competitive for teens or young adults ages 18 to 22 who are added to a parent’s policy.

The Wespack package can be very convenient and money-saving: It bundles car and homeowners insurance into one policy, giving you one bill and one shared deductible. So if one event damages your house and car, you don’t have two deductibles to deal with.

Drivers with new cars may appreciate Westfield’s accident forgiveness, new car replacement and gap insurance.

Westfield’s usage-based insurance program, MissionSafe, provides an enrollment discount of 10% and safe drivers can potentially earn up to 40% at renewal. Westfield says the average discount is 20%. And unlike some competitors, your rates will not go up if your driving doesn’t score well.

Among all these bright spots, Westfield unfortunately offers a very poor digital experience, primarily due to its lack of a mobile app and online quotes. Also, in our analysis its website search function wasn’t helpful and there is no live chat option.

Based on our survey of Westfield customers:

  • They are likely to recommend Westfield car insurance to a friend or family member.
  • They are satisfied with their purchase.

Among Westfield customers who have made claims:

  • They were very satisfied overall with the claims process.

Best Digital Experience: Geico

We analyzed mobile app ratings and website functionality to see if auto insurers are keeping up with increasing demands for a delightful digital experience. We found that Geico has the overall best digital experience among the top-rated companies in our analysis.

Company Forbes Advisor rating for digital experience Our Expert Take
Geico
5.0
Geico leaves its competitors in the dust thanks to the live chat on its website, high user ratings for its mobile apps (4.8 out of 5) and a Spanish website version. You can also get online quotes and buy a policy online.
Progressive
4.4
Progressive scored well for its mobile app ratings (4.8 out of 5), helpful site search and ability to get quotes and buy a policy online. But there’s no Spanish version of its site or live chat.
Travelers
4.2
Travelers’ average mobile app rating (4.7 out of 5) is fairly good and has a good site search. But it lacks a Spanish version and online chat. You can obtain an online quote, but you must call to purchase a policy.
Erie
3.9
Erie’s mobile app fails to impress, with a low user rating (2.8 out of 5). It has a good site search but lacks online chat and a Spanish version. You can get an online quote but must contact an agent to buy a policy.
USAA
3.4
USAA’s mobile app has OK user ratings (4 out of 5) and you can get a quote and buy a policy online. But it has no Spanish website version and its live chat leaves a lot to be desired: There are only five pre-set questions, none of which could answer our test question about how to get policy documents.
Nationwide
2.2
Nationwide’s app has a good user rating (4.5 out of 5) and a helpful site search, but it lacks website live chat and a Spanish version. It has an online quote form, but we could not obtain quotes. Instead, it diverted to partners or told us to call for a quote.
Westfield
No stars
Westfield lacks basic digital features: No mobile app, no online quotes, no website chat and a site search that delivered poor results.

Shop Around Frequently

When it comes to auto insurance shopping advice, early, often and regularly are the three watchwords to remember. I recommend making insurance shopping a regular exercise and not once a decade, when you trade in a vehicle or only when rates go up. Take advantage of all your resources—call your company to ask for discounts, use the internet to get multiple quotes, ask a local agent to describe options, and don’t forget to ask your family and neighbors.

Don’t Overlook Small Insurers

I recommend looking at companies of all sizes when searching for the best insurance company. If you count out small insurers, you may miss out on a company that offers good coverage perks and superb rates.

Penny Gusner

Penny Gusner

Insurance Senior Writer

Be Cautious About Usage-Based Insurance

Your car insurance company might suggest you become part of a telematics program, aka usage-based auto insurance. If you like your privacy, I’d say this isn’t a good option for you. Your data could be shared with other insurers and even affect future car insurance quotes from other companies. Also, most people in usage-based programs do not drive well enough to get a discount.

Confirm There’s a Mobile App

If digital experience is important to you, make sure the insurer you’re considering has a mobile app. Believe it or not, not all insurers do! I like to have the ability to show my insurance ID card from my phone, for example.

Michelle Megna

Don’t Skimp on Liability Insurance

With an increasingly litigious society, I think it’s very important to make sure you have generous liability insurance. If you haven’t paid much attention to this line item on your declarations page, I recommend taking a look. You want enough liability insurance to equal your net worth, which is essentially what you can be sued for. Buy umbrella insurance for extra liability insurance at a good price.

Les Masterson

Les Masterson

Consider Rental Reimbursement Insurance

I think rental reimbursement insurance is an underappreciated coverage. Car repair times have been going up. Your vehicle could easily be in the shop for a collision repair for three weeks or more, waiting to get worked on and waiting for parts. This coverage can help pay for a rental, so you’re not footing the whole bill yourself.

Should I buy gap insurance when I buy a new car?

– Jolene A., Roanoke, Virginia

Gap insurance should be considered if you’ll owe much more on your car than it’s worth. Collision or comprehensive coverage total loss claims only pay the car’s value at the time of the incident, leaving you to pay any remaining amount due on a car loan or lease. Gap insurance pays this difference (minus your deductible). You don’t need gap insurance if you owe less than the car’s value.

Should I get full coverage if I buy a new car?

– Justice W., Mount Dora, Florida

Yes, you should buy full coverage car insurance for a new car. If you have a loan or lease, the financial institution will require you to carry it. If you own the car outright, it’s still wise to have it. The comprehensive and collision portion pays to repair or replace the car if it’s stolen or damaged from an auto accident, fire, vandalism, falling objects, striking an animal or severe weather. You could face a financial crisis without full coverage if you cause major damage to or total your vehicle.

Does where I live impact my car insurance rates?

Dolores S., Arlington, Texas

Yes, location will affect auto insurance costs. Those living in urban areas tend to have higher rates due to a greater chance of being in an accident. Also, living in an area with more claims (such as vehicle theft or weather-related claims), higher vehicle repair costs and high medical expenses can result in higher rates.

What is a non-renewal and what should I do if I get a non-renewal notice?

– Jay H., BLowing Rock, North Carolina

A non-renewal means that at the end of your current term your auto policy will end because you’re not being offered a new policy. If you receive a non-renewal notice, you should compare car insurance quotes with other auto insurers as soon as possible in order to avoid a gap in coverage.

Methodology

To identify the best car insurance companies we evaluated each company based on its average rates for a variety of drivers, the coverage options offered, complaints against the company, digital experience, collision repair grades from auto body professionals and our surveys of customer service, pricing and claims satisfaction.

Auto insurance rates (40% of score): We analyzed average rates from each company for good drivers, drivers who have caused an accident, drivers with a speeding ticket, drivers with a DUI, drivers with poor credit and drivers caught without insurance.

Unless otherwise noted, rates are based on a 40-year-old female driver with a Toyota RAV4 and coverage of:

  • $100,000 for injuries to one person, $300,000 for injuries per accident and $100,000 of property damage (known as 100/300/100).
  • Uninsured motorist coverage of 100/300.
  • Collision and comprehensive insurance with a $500 deductible.

Car insurance coverage options (20% of score): Any auto insurance company can provide the basics of liability insurance, collision and comprehensive coverage and other standard offerings. But it’s also important to have access to additional coverage types that can provide greater protection or cost savings. In this category, we gave points to companies that offer:

  • Accident forgiveness
  • Gap insurance
  • New car replacement
  • Nonowners policies
  • Usage-based insurance
  • Pay-per-mile insurance
  • Rideshare insurance
  • SR-22s
  • Vanishing deductibles

Best Car Insurance Companies Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is car insurance?

Car insurance is a contract between you and the insurance company that provides you with specific coverage in exchange for your premium payments. A car insurance policy is a contract that outlines what you can make claims for and your duties as a customer.

The best car insurance policies cover liability (meaning damage and injuries you cause to others), damage to your own vehicle and car accident injuries to you and your passengers.

How can I find the best price on car insurance?

The key to finding a good deal is to get car insurance quotes from multiple companies. That’s the only way you’ll know what companies are going to charge and which companies are coming in with the lowest rates.

Another good savings strategy is to bundle auto insurance with another policy, such as homeowners or renters insurance. Buying more than one policy from the same company typically results in a decent discount.

What car insurance discounts should I look for?

Look for car insurance discounts that fit your driving profile. Seek out a good driver discount if you have a clean driving record. Look for a bundling discount if you buy your auto and home insurance with the same company or a multi-car discount if you have two or more cars on your policy.

There is a wide variety of car insurance discounts offered by insurers, so ask your agent if there are any you are missing out on—like going paperless by receiving insurance bills and policies electronically for a small saving. Check what car insurance discounts for students you can obtain if you have a young driver in your household.

Is car insurance getting more expensive?

The cost of auto insurance continues its upward trend. Auto insurance rates have continually escalated due to increased claims costs for insurers, which pass on the higher costs to customers in the form of higher rates. The uptick in claims expenses is fueled by more costly car parts, labor and medical bills.

How does car insurance work?

Car insurance works like this: Once you pay your bill, your auto insurer agrees to pay for incidents specified by your policy (up to your chosen limits). If a problem covered by your policy occurs, you can file a claim. Your insurer will assess the loss and pay the claim accordingly.
